Awaji is an island in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, in the eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea between the islands of Honshu and Shikoku. Today the island of Awaji consists of three municipalities: Awaji, Sumoto and Minamiawaji. The total population of the island is 157,000 people. According to the Shinto creation myth, Awaji is the birthplace of Japan. The story of Japan’s origins describes how the gods passed the country on to the people. Awaji Island is where it all began.
